A mass shooter killed five people and injured six others, including a law enforcement officer, in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, on Monday, police said.

The shooting took place at Old National Bank and video of the scene showed police running to warn people outside the bank while shouting, “Active shooter at the bank!”

According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, an “active aggressor” was first reported around 8:30 a.m. in the 300 block E Main at the Old National Bank.

The shooter is dead, police said.

There is no longer a danger to the public, but police are asking the public to continue avoiding the area.

“He had a long ‘assault rifle’ and you hear the shots just start firing,” one apparent witness to the shooting said. “I didn’t see his face. We were in the back conference room.”

“Whoever was next to me got shot. Blood is on me from it,” the witness added, turning to the show blood on his shirt.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear tweeted, “LMPD has confirmed a shooting situation in downtown Louisville with multiple casualties. I am headed there now. Please pray for all of the families impacted and for the city of Louisville. ^AB.”

“Kelley and I are praying for everyone involved in the deadly shooting in downtown Louisville this morning. Our hearts break for the families of those lost,” Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul tweeted.

“Elaine and I are devastated by the news coming out of Louisville this morning. Thank you to LMPD and our first responders for your bravery at the scene. We send our prayers to the victims, their families, and the city of Louisville as we await more information,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tweeted.

This was a breaking news story. The details were periodically updated as more information became available.
