Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis slammed the indictment of former-President Donald Trump as “un-American” on Thursday after news criminal charges for Trump were revealed.
DeSantis wrote the following statement on Twitter:
The weaponization of the legal system to advance a political agenda turns the rule of law on its head.
It is un-American.
The Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney has consistently bent the law to downgrade felonies and to excuse criminal misconduct. Yet, now he is stretching the law to target a political opponent.
Florida will not assist in an extradition request given the questionable circumstances at issue with this Soros-backed Manhattan prosecutor and his political agenda.
The popular Florida governor is widely considered Trump’s top competitor for the 2024 GOP presidential nominee.
Republicans nationwide rallied behind Trump, accusing Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who is leading the case, of weaponizing the law for political purposes.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) tweeted, “Here we go again — an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump.”
“I’m directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions,” he added.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) simply tweeted, “Outrageous.”
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) tweeted a statement warning about how the unprecedented prosecution threatens the future of the American republic.
“Never before in American history has the party in power targeted a former president with criminal charges. Such an unprecedented step should not be taken lightly. But the left-wing prosecutor in New York City reportedly has charged President Trump with a convoluted legal theory already rejected by his predecessor and the Department of Justice,” Cotton wrote. “I hope that the courts dismiss the indictment as a matter of law, and I urge the prosecutors pursing President Trump to carefully consider the harm caused to our republic if flimsy charges against former presidents become a new common practice in our politics.”
Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn slammed the indictment as further evidence of a two-tier justice system plaguing the United States.
“Once again, we see two tiers of justice at work. There is no limit to what the left will do to bring down President Trump, and today’s indictment is nothing but a cynical, Soros-backed play to take down a 2024 candidate and former President,” she tweeted.
“It is a gross abuse of power by a blue state government to fabricate the outcome they’ve wanted since 2015. The left has thrown the rule of law out the window at the expense of American democracy. It’s unprecedented, unnerving, and unacceptable,” Blackburn added.
Trump is expected to appear in court on Tuesday and may be processed like any other criminal defendant, which includes fingerprinting and mug shots, anonymous sources told the Washington Post.
